Utilizing Cloud Services For Your Business

Tuesday, October 16th & October 23rd from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM

Brad Scott & Amber Carson Miller – Engineers for Rocket Science Consulting and Founders of their Flight School

More often these days, applications are being run off of the cloud. For a startup or early stage company, there's no one size fits all cloud solution. This course is the first collaboration between Cross Campus and Rocket Science Consulting's training arm Flight School. In it, we will cover the various types of cloud services and how to utilize them for core company functions such as email, document management, storage, accounting, CRM and collaboration.

Session One - Tuesday, October 16th

  • Examples of popular cloud based products - Google Apps/365, Dropbox/Egnyte, Quickbooks, Zendesk, SalesForce, Campfire/Basecamp
  • How your cloud based apps work together and talk to each other
  • Pre-conceived notions about the cloud from a business & technical perspectives
  • Pros & Cons of hosting in the cloud vs local hosting

Session Two - Tuesday, October 23rd

  • Practical issues - Security, compliance requirements, data integrity, connectivity
  • Best practices and implementation with new or existing systems
  • Adding mobile devices to the picture
  • Server hosting (e.g. AWS) vs fully managed environments (e.g. Heroku, Engine Yard)

Prerequisites - This is a two session course.  The first session is intro level and doesn't require any pre-existing knowledge of cloud concepts or services.  It's ideal for non-technical founders or management of small companies looking to implement or revisit their current cloud infrastructure.  In the second session, which is more technically focused, we will explore the pros and cons of different hosted environments such as Rackspace, AWS, Engine Yard, etc.  Both sessions will use real-world case studies of companies using cloud services.

Brad Scott is an Apple and Cisco Certified Engineer for Rocket Science Consulting. He is one of the two program directors and Flight Instructors for Rocket's own training arm "Flight School". Brad worked for Apple as a trainer and systems engineer and is now creating custom training and classes for a variety of organizations.

Amber Miller is a San Francisco based IT professional with a background in design and technology training. She is a founding member of Rocket Science Consulting's 'Flight School', working with creative agencies and startups to provide exceptional training and IT instruction. Amber has had the opportunity to work with organizations such as Apple and Landor Associates, providing training for clients and team members alike. Her passion lies in assisting individuals to master technology tools and achieve their highest goals.
